What is a Certified Nurse Aide?
A Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) is responsible for the daily activities and care of patients, most often who are weakened or elderly residents in a nursing home facility. CNAs assist Registered Nurses (RNs) with tasks such as feeding and bathing residents, recording electronic blood pressure, and performing passive range of motion exercises for bedridden patients. Medical jobs such as being a Nursing Assistant are very rewarding. These daily tasks help keep residents healthy and well-cared for as some are only temporarily in the care of nurses, while others are in long-term nursing homes.

All CNA programs in South Carolina must be 100 hours of instruction, including 40 hours of clinical training. You may graduate from your training program in a different state, but your out-of-state program would still need to have been at least 100 hours.
To find a CNA training program near you, scroll to the top of the page to use the Free School Finder. You can just enter your zip code and start searching CNA programs. You can request free enrollment information from whichever schools you’re interested in and they will contact you with availability and program options. There are many types of CNA programs. If you’re already working and looking for night or weekend CNA classes, you can choose a part-time program. Or, if you’d like to enter the medical field as soon as possible, there are also fast CNA classes in South Carolina that you can complete in about 4-weeks or so. Some of the classroom studies can be completed in online Nurse Aide classes, but you must complete the 40 clinical hours in person. Some nursing homes will also sponsor free CNA classes if you’re already employed.
Once you graduate from your Nurse Aide classes, you can fill out an Application for Registration by Competency Examination. This is an online application through a testing agency called Pearson VUE. In the application you must show that you’ve graduated from a state-approved program and submit a non-refundable fee. There is no criminal background check, but you will have to answer the 2 questions: if you have ever been convicted or pled guilty to a felony and if you’ve ever been on a state’s abuse registry including South Carolina. Once the application is submitted you can schedule your test. Make sure to study, practice your clinical skills, and take a free CNA practice exam.
After passing your CNA exam in South Carolina, congratulations! You can now be listed on the South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry.

The CNA Test in South Carolina
The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) partners with a testing agency called Pearson VUE to administer the CNA test. The test is officially called the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination. Pearson VUE develops and scores the test, while the South Carolina Department of Health issues the actual Nursing Assistant license. You’ll need to make an online reservation for your test date with Pearson VUE at least 10 days prior to the test date.
The Nurse Aide Exam in South Carolina is made up of 2 sections ; the first is written and the second is manual. You must take and pass both sections of the test within 2 years from your graduation date of your CNA training program. Otherwise, you will have to reenroll in a South Carolina CNA training program and graduate a second time. The first time you take the test you must take both the written and manual sections. However, if you do not pass one of these sections then you only have to retest the section you didn’t pass. Remember to also arrive to your test 30 minutes early to check in.
The written portion of the test is 70 multiple-choice questions about knowledge of being a CNA. If you are not comfortable with reading this, you may opt instead to take the written test as an oral test. The oral test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and 10 multiple-choice reading comprehension questions. If you wish to take the oral exam instead of the written exam, you must request this change at the time you submit your application. The oral test is also available in Spanish. There are also CNA classes en Español as well. The Spanish oral test, however, does have the reading comprehension questions in English so you must have an understanding of basic English vocabulary that a CNA would use. You will have a total of 2 hours to complete the written or oral sections.
The second part of the test is a manual skills evaluation of how you would preform your responsibilities as a CNA on a regular day. You must wear non-skid shoes and loose-fitting clothing. You will be required to wear a gown over your clothing as well. A nursing test administer will randomly choose 5 skills from a list of of a possible 22 skills. You will have 30 minutes to correctly demonstrate these skills. You will be demonstrating these CNA skills on a volunteer acting as a patient. You must correctly perform all 5 skills in order to pass the manual section. For a detailed description of all possible skills you can be tested on, consult the South Carolina CNA Candidate Handbook.
CNA Exam Cost Broken Down:
$101 - Written & Skills Evaluation
$101 - Oral & Skills Evaluation
$30 - Written/Oral Exam only (re-test)
$71 - Skills Exam only (re-test)
On the Day of the Exam, Plan to Bring:
Two forms of proper identification, at least one with a photo I.D.
Social Security number
Non-skid, closed-toe shoes for the clinical evaluation
