How to Become a Nurse Aide in Nebraska

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services oversees training and testing for Nurse Aides. CNA programs in Nebraska must include at least 75 hours of instruction, or a 21-hour basic resident care course for intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled. Registered Nurses (RNs) must supervise CNA training. As part of the curriculum, CNA students must complete 1 hour of Nebraska-specific abuse/neglect/misappropriation training. Additionally, Nurse Aides must be at least 16 years old and not be convicted of a crime that violates “moral standards” or the intent to defraud. They must be at least 18 years of age to use a lift on their own. A Nurse Aide who is 16 to 17 years old may assist in the use of a lift. 

Nurse Aide schools in Nebraska must include at least 16 hours of practical, or clinical, training in the following subjects:

  2. Personal Care Skills

  3. Mental Health and Social Service Needs

  4. Care of Cognitively Impaired Residents

The Nurse Aide Test in Nebraska

The Nebraska Nurse Aide Exam consists of 2 sections: a written/oral test and a practical skills portion. The written/oral exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. You may opt to request the written portion as an oral exam. The skills exam requires a demonstration of 6 skills. Examples of these skills include proper hand washing, safely moving a patient, changing bed linens in an occupied bed, partial bed bath, etc. You will perform the skills on a medical mannequin. Both sections require a passing grade of 70% or higher and students have 3 attempts to pass the exam.

Once you have graduated from a CNA school and successfully passed the CNA exam in Nebraska, you can then be officially added to the Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry and be eligible to start working as a Nursing Assistant. Congratulations!

  1. A photo ID that is valid and current, such as a driver’s license or passport

  2. A second form of identification with signature

Renew a CNA Certification in Nebraska
