Lower-Body Movement for a Patient:
Knock on patient’s door, and then enter
Greet patient by name, introduce yourself and what you’re doing
Provide for privacy by shutting curtains
Wash your hands
Check patient’s ID, to confirm identity
Lay the patient down
You will repeat each exercise below 3 times
Your movements must be slow
You must always support the patient with both hands
You must continually check the patient’s comfort level visually or verbally throughout the exercise
Only expose the limb you are working on
Exercise One: Hip Extension & Knee Flexion - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding the ankle, bend knee towards chest then take away
Exercise Two: Hip Adduction - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding ankle, move straight leg away from the body
Exercise Three: Hip Adduction - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding ankle, move straight leg across the body
Exercise Four: Hip Rotation - With one hand under the thigh and one holding the ankle, lift leg and rotate it towards the body, away from the body, and back to center
Exercise Five: Ankle Flexion- With one hand holding the ankle and one around the foot, flex the foot back, forward, and back to center
Exercise Six: Ankle Rotation- With one hand holding the ankle and the other around the foot, rotate the foot in a circular motion
Ask the patient if they want to sit up, make sure they’re covered
Place the call button in the patient’s hand
Wash your hands and ask how they would like the head of their bed
Close the curtains
