Lower-Body Movement for a Patient:

  1. Knock on patient’s door, and then enter

  2. Greet patient by name, introduce yourself and what you’re doing

  3. Provide for privacy by shutting curtains

  4. Wash your hands

  5. Check patient’s ID, to confirm identity

  6. Lay the patient down

  7. You will repeat each exercise below 3 times

  8. Your movements must be slow

  9. You must always support the patient with both hands

  10. You must continually check the patient’s comfort level visually or verbally throughout the exercise

  11. Only expose the limb you are working on

  12. Exercise One: Hip Extension & Knee Flexion - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding the ankle, bend knee towards chest then take away

  13. Exercise Two: Hip Adduction - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding ankle, move straight leg away from the body

  14. Exercise Three: Hip Adduction - With one hand under thigh and one hand holding ankle, move straight leg across the body

  15. Exercise Four: Hip Rotation - With one hand under the thigh and one holding the ankle, lift leg and rotate it towards the body, away from the body, and back to center

  16. Exercise Five: Ankle Flexion- With one hand holding the ankle and one around the foot, flex the foot back, forward, and back to center

  17. Exercise Six: Ankle Rotation- With one hand holding the ankle and the other around the foot, rotate the foot in a circular motion

  18. Ask the patient if they want to sit up, make sure they’re covered

  19. Place the call button in the patient’s hand

  20. Wash your hands and ask how they would like the head of their bed

  21. Close the curtains
