How to Become a CNA in Florida

The Florida Board of Nursing establishes the requirements for CNAs to become certified in the state. To start a CNA training program, you need to be at least 18 years old, or have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

CNAs must graduate from an nursing assistant program in Florida. Each school must have accredited CNA classes in Florida. Each training program must include a total number of 56 instructional hours; 16 hours in the classroom, and 40 hours of clinical. At least 20 of these clinical hours must be practiced in a licensed nursing home or long-term care facility. The program can usually be completed in 4-15 weeks, and there are some accelerated programs that offer 4-week CNA classes as well. Once you graduate from your CNA program, you can start your state application and test.

Nursing assistants must pass a background screening as part of their application to be a CNA in Florida. Applicants must list each offense, with the exception of any minor traffic tickets. Applicants with felonies or prior criminal convictions are still eligible to become a CNA, however you may need to submit letters of recommendation, records, self-explanation, or documents stating you completed probation or parole. The nursing board, however, will not issue licenses to those who have been convicted of specifically health care fraud and public health felonies.

First-time CNAs submitting their application must submit their fingerprints electronically as part of a Level II background screening. This is part of your completed application for the state exam, administered through Prometric, a nationwide testing contractor. You must use a Livescan service provider that will send the fingerprint data to the Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse). All submissions must be electronic.

You can use any Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)-approved Livescan service with a complete list of stores by each county here. You can easily make an appointment at any location near you and only need to bring 2 forms of identification and this form. Also, remember to use the correct Originating Agency Identification (ORI) number when submitting your application. The appointment is typically no more than 10 minutes and results are typically received within 3-5 business days. The fee is usually about $25-$35.

Once you complete your background screening, Prometric will inform you of your results and you will now be eligible to take the state exam.

Are you a recent veteran or a military spouse of an active duty service member? If so, you may be eligible to have the CNA licensing fees waived. The Florida Department of Health offers the VALOR program (Florida Veterans Application for Licensure Online Response) for those seeking a health care license in the Florida. For more information and eligibility requirements, visit the VALOR program.

A Closer Look at CNA Training

A typical CNA program in Florida will include 16 hours of introductory training before administering direct care for patients. Introductory hours consist of communication, infection control, patients’ rights, and safety procedures such as the Heimlich maneuver. You can expect to take CNA classes that cover topics such as:

  • Nutrition & Diet

  • Geriatric Practices

  • Social Service

  • Psychology Support

  • Legal Responsibilities

  • Rehabilitation

  • Personal Care & Hygiene

  • Infection Control

  • Patient Communication

  • CPR/First Aid

  • Patients’ Rights

The CNA Training Program can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,500, depending on the program. For example, the American Red Cross program costs $1,300. However, these fees do not include classroom materials, uniforms, or textbooks. Some facilities, such as adult education centers, and nursing homes, offer free CNA classes, while others accept financial aid and payment plans. You can also get a free CNA Certification if you apply for your employer to reimburse your training if you’re hired within 12 months of getting your certification.

The CNA Test in Florida

The Certified Nurse Aide Exam in Florida is administered by nationwide company Prometric. Many other states also use this testing company to certify medical professionals. You can visit their website specific to the Florida CNA exam to submit an online application. It’s also possible to mail in an application.

The exam comprises of 2 portions: a written (or oral) exam, and a clinical skills evaluation. Both are administered on the same day. The written exam has 60 multiple choice questions in English. You will have 90 minutes to complete the written portion.

The clinical exam will be between 31-40 minutes to complete, depending on which skill you’re tested on. There are a possible 12 skills you must be prepared for but you will only be test on 5 skills. You must complete all 5 skills correctly in order pass the clinical portion of the exam. These skills must be completed competently, not perfectly.

In Florida, candidates must help other students during the test by playing the role of a resident during the Clinical Skills Test.

You can locate a regional testing center near you by searching with your zip code. If you require particular testing accommodations, you can request these with a specialty packet as part of your application. Some of the common testing accommodations include extended time, a separate testing room, and an administer to read the questions. Note that these requests may take 30 days to process. However, oral and audio versions of the exam are widely available and can be scheduled immediately. If English is your second language, you are able to opt out and take the written exam orally. You can take CNA classes en Español as well.

To reschedule your test date and to avoid fees, you must contact Prometric a full 5 business days before your scheduled exam. Otherwise you won’t be reimbursed.

If an applicant fails to pass the nursing assistant competency examination in 3 attempts, the applicant is not eligible for reexamination unless the applicant completes an approved training program. If you have additional questions about the exam or application, you can contact Prometric at FLCNA@prometric.com or call at (888) 277-3500. Florida-specific information is also found here.

You can see the results of your exam within 48 hours online. Your exam results will be mailed to the Florida Board of Nursing within 1 week. It can take 4 weeks for the Florida Board of Nursing to mail you your certificate.

Before you take your state exam, it’s recommended you take a free CNA practice exam to prepare. We offer a comprehensive study guide to make sure you’re ready for the test.

The Florida Department of Health’s Board of Nursing regulates all CNA certifications. Once you graduate from a CNA training program and successfully pass the CNA state exam, you can be added to the Florida Registry. It can take 3-5 weeks to be added to the nursing registry.

CNA Jobs in Florida

Florida has the third highest state employment of CNAs in the entire country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are nearly 90,000 Certified Nurse Assistants working in the state with 10.44 CNAs per one thousand jobs. The hourly mean wage is $12.90 and the annual mean wage is $26,840.

The metropolitan area of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach is the 8th largest metro area in the country for top employment of CNAs. There are nearly 23,000 CNAs employed in this area alone.

Florida also has a high location quotient. This means that CNAs have a higher number of jobs than the average person. One of the highest location quotients of nursing assistants in the country is in Homosassa Springs, FL. There are 680 CNA jobs here.

Nationwide, the top 10% of CNAs can make $50,000 annually. Nursing assistant jobs are also very plentiful. Due to the ability for increased training opportunities and further career advancements, there is a high turn-around rate for CNAs, as many use their work experience to start the accreditation process needed to become Registered Nurses. Working as a CNA is not only rewarding, but also offers job stability and immense growth opportunities.

Nearly 50% of CNAs work in Nursing Care Facilities, and there are nearly 700 licensed nursing homes in Florida, representing approximately 84,448 beds.

Where-do-CNAs-Work_.png

The remaining jobs are at hospitals, medical offices, facilities for the elderly, mental health clinics, outpatient care centers, and even film and television housing facilities. CNAs play a such vital role in patient care, that the growth of CNA jobs is projected to grow 11% by 2026. An aging population will significantly increase nurse aide jobs. You may also work at a nursing facility for a maximum of 4 months while you are enrolled in your training program.

CNA Job Advancement

A Certified Nurse Assistant is considered an entry-level position in the medical field, and therefore is eligible for many promotions. CNAs work with a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and directly under a Registered Nurse (RN), so they are rewarded by seeing firsthand what it looks like to reach that next level. To become a LPN, a CNA can apply for a bridge course that can be found at a community college or a vocational training school that can either be offered online or on-campus. The Florida Board of Nursing has a designated list of schools that offer CNA to LPN training. Typically this training includes a 6-24 week class with 75 hours of training, however many current CNAs are able to use their work hours to apply to training. This makes it very feasible to promote to LPN quickly. Because of the ease of promoting to LPN and perhaps RN, Florida has a high turnover for entry-level CNA jobs advancement, and thousands of CNA jobs will open annually because of it.

Florida is a great location to promote from a CNA to a LPN or RN because there are so many healthcare jobs. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity said there are more than 7,000 job openings for RNs and more than 2,000 job openings for LPNs.

You may also join an association for resources and to help advance your career, such as the Florida Health Care Association.

Renew a CNA Certification in Florida

The Florida Department of Health issues renewals of CNA licenses. In order to be employable, you must have a valid license and must renew your CNA license every 2 years. You must have been paid as a CNA during the last 24 consecutive months. If your license expires, you must reapply as a CNA. If you renew your active license before it expires the cost will be $55, however if you renew it 90 days after it expires then the cost will be $105. You should start the renewal process 120 days before your license expires.

To renew your CNA license in Florida, you must complete 24 hours of CNA training each renewal in the following topics: infection control, domestic violence, CPR, medical record documentation, communication with cognitively-impaired patients, resident rights, and medical safety.

You must continually update your CNA license if you change your name or address. This is free of charge, however if you would like a new certificate showing the name change then it will cost $25.
